How to choose paintings for the interior? Art for your interior and more

1. Style

When we talk about art style we can divide it to two big groups:

1. Modern interior.  It includes mid-century modern, minimalism, loft, neoclassicism.

2. Conservative.  Among its representatives are dark classics and country styles.

What gives us an understanding of the style of the interior?

Any item you want to fit into an existing living space (whether it's a vase, rug, or piece of art) needs to be in harmony in style with what's already in the room.  An object that "falls out" of the general style will look alien.

So for modern interior will be good abstraction, avant-garde and conceptual art.  If the interior is conservative, then we look at realistic art (landscapes, still lifes, portraits), impressionism.

As usual, there are exceptions to all rules.  The given boundaries help us at the initial stage, it is also important to listen to intuition, because it is often possible to combine different styles with a well-chosen color and shape.

2.Colour

The picture can support the main color of the interior.  And it can become a connecting element, bringing together additional and / or accent colors.  Whether your interior is monochrome or brightly colored, a picture can soothe it or add drive.

3. Decide on the place of the picture

Answer the question, where do you look first when you enter a room?

Try to notice how your eyes wander around the room, at what points it pauses.

Such places are the main contenders for the title of custodian of painting.

Where is the seating area in the room?  In the office, it can be a cozy armchair, in the living room - a large sofa, in the dining room - a place at the table.  Place the picture so that it is convenient for you to look at it from your resting place.  The placement height will also depend on this.  For example, you should be comfortable looking at your work without tilting your head back.

Leave free space around the painting, do not press it too close to the furniture.  There should always be "air" around the picture!

*You can also put the picture on a chest of drawers, a desk and even the floor, if it is large!

 4. Decide on the size of the picture

The rule of three quarters will help you here - the width of the picture should be approximately equal to ¾ of the length of the piece of furniture over which it is placed.

For example, a painting is planned above the console.  The length of the console is 120 cm, multiply by 3/4, we get 90 cm. So, the width of the picture above this console should be about 90 cm. Or the length of the sofa is 240 cm, multiply by ¾, we get 180 cm. So, the picture above the sofa needs something like this  length.

Living room

The living room is a gathering place for guests and family, so it’s important to make your environment positive and beautiful.  The style of the image will directly depend on the style of your room.  It's important to listen to your heart. The choice of themes for the living room is simply great.  These can be images of animals, rural and urban landscapes, flowering gardens, seas and rivers, abstraction, portraits of family members.

If the living room is not large, then consider buying a picture of an open space, such as a skyline or an open calm sea or sky.

Kitchen

For the kitchen, it would be appropriate to consider still lifes, beautiful flowers, romantic landscapes, funny stories, images of funny animals.  But, first of all, the picture should please you and give you pleasant emotions.  Like it or not, there is always additional moisture in the kitchen, so when choosing a picture for the kitchen, give preference to works that are varnished or protected by glass, or use acrylic works.  Choose the safest place for the picture, well, if it is the wall opposite the plate.  You can successfully fit pictures into free shelves.

Bedroom

The bedroom is your place of relaxation. Therefore, paintings for the bedroom should not contain movement, for example, a herd of galloping horses, a fast river, big waves, and so on.  The movement will interfere with a peaceful rest.  The image in the picture should bring serenity and bring you into harmony.

You can consider paintings depicting symbols of love, for example, red flowers, especially poppies or peonies.
Picturesque calm landscapes will noticeably calm your nervous system after a hard day's work.  A calm river, a chamomile field, a birch grove, what could be more comfortable.
It is good to use for the bedroom an image of animals that live in pairs, for example, a pair of swans.  This is a symbol of love and fidelity, which will bring peace and understanding to your family life.

Cabinet and office

A picture in your office will not only decorate the interior, but can also positively affect your career and improve your financial situation.

In the office, it is not recommended to hang pictures depicting angry or dying animals, military battles, fading landscapes, you do not need to consider dark and gloomy shades.
In order to attract positive energy to your occupation, use images of landscapes.  They will harmoniously fit into almost any style.  Images of nature do not carry a heavy emotional load.
In order not to have problems with the authorities - hang the image of the mountains.
Place a picture with a large beautiful house behind you, this will become an analogue of your strong rear.
To easily climb the career ladder, you need a picture with a ladder going up.
To achieve your dream, hang a picture of her.
Images of the road, the river will attract good luck, just make sure that there are no obstacles in the way, and the road is smooth and the water is calm.

Kid’s room

When choosing a painting for a kid’s room , keep in mind that children are more sensitive than adults.  Therefore, you should take a closer look at your child, his character and hobbies, and only then buy a picture.
Calm children will not interfere with the image of movement, but active ones, on the contrary, need something to calm them down.
An ideal choice would be the image of animals with their cubs.  So your baby will be in full confidence that you are constantly next to him.
You can buy fairy-tale characters, heroes of your favorite cartoons or films.  Only they should be positive characters, by no means evil heroes who will develop aggression in your child.  A picture in a nursery develops a love for beauty in your child, teaches him to appreciate life.

Toilet

When choosing the subject of a painting, they most often turn to the sea, shells,, seagulls.  But don't just stop at them.  You can harmoniously fit flowers, animals, and landscapes into the interior of the bathroom.  Give preference to work done on canvas with oil, rather than watercolor on paper.  Paper from moisture is deformed, and the paint may leak.  If you hide the work under the glass, then the condensate will still accumulate on the glass.

Please note that a layer of protective varnish has been applied to the oil painting, which will extend the life of the painting in a damp room.

It is even better if the picture is painted with acrylic.
